| If it smells like the Fountain.. and sounds like the Fountain.. but doesn't look like the Fountain.. it's still the Fountain!
Sunday 28 September 2008 | So you want to hear a funny story?
| Submitted by vttym
It's a rainy Sunday here in Jersey, and me and two buddies online decide today's the day to tackle the Endless Setlist in Rock Band 2. To explain: The Endless Setlist plays all 84 songs in Rock Band 2 in a row, no breaks. My yellow pad on my drumset has cracked and isn't the best (drops notes from time to time), but I figure it's doable.
I take drums on Hard, and we're plugging away, taking an occasional fail-out break when needed. (We'd fail a song intentionally so that the screen would say "Retry or End" and wait for our selection, so we could take a break!)
7 hours, 6 Diet Cokes, a box of Cheez-Its, and a missed football Sunday later, we're staring at song 84... Painkiller by Judas Priest. To this point, we've 5 starred every song except Visions and You Oughta Know (Don't ask.. my brain shut off and I couldn't find the beat..)
And we're killing the song -- chugging along, get our 5 stars, and are coasting into the finish line.
And then the funny thing happens.
My Xbox freezes. Not the lag freeze where you'll miss a few notes and resync.
Total, catastrophic, unrecoverable freeze. And no, you cannot save your progress.
As I stared at the lead singer stuck in his singing pose, my 2 friends in endless overdrive and 508,000 points that I'll never add to, I wonder if this is some sort of cosmic joke.
Or maybe my punishment for blowing an Alanis Morrisette song.
Regardless, after about 2 minutes of shaking my head in disbelief, I powered down the Xbox, and somehow managed to not break anything.
We'll be at it again soon, I'm sure, but I'm gonna take a little break for a bit.
And no, my friends were not able to finish and get their credit for it. When I crashed, they got booted out. Hooray!
Oyi. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. If so, I feel for you.

It's official: All scores have been reset (except for games added in the latest batch, which were unaffected by the scoring data corruption). All old champions have had their score left behind as a comment. I will keep that comment on the game until the person who earned that score beats it. Otherwise, it remains as either the top score or, if it gets beat in the new wave, the second score, etc. Once the original owner of that score beats it, the old score will be removed (or if more than 15 people beat the score).
Also, for a short time, I am reducing the gold payouts for achieving a top score, beating your personal best, and beating the monthly best, for obvious reasons. Once scores have been established for majority of the games, I will set the payouts back to the old levels.
Going through the games brought back some old memories, so take a trip through the categories and see if you can bring your old score back to official glory, or beat those scores you thought were impossible!

It seems to be split pretty even on those that want a reset, and those that don't, so of course I will come up with a creative solution which, thanks to the new software, is now possible.
I will reset the scores. However, I will leave a comment on each game's play page with whoever has the current top score, and the date it was scored, so that if you had a score that you were particularly proud of, it'll be there. This will only count for the top score, so those that had good secondary scores, you will need to play to get that thing back!
This reset will only affect games that were added before the software update. The latest batch of games will not be reset, as there is no data corruption with those.
I will conduct this reset on Sunday. If you have any comments or thoughts, now would be the time to voice them in the comment portion of this post.
Friday 05 September 2008 | Don't be afraid: the new shiny arcade is 234% more fun!
| Submitted by vttym
As if we needed any other reason to whittle away the hours on the Fountain, I was able to update the arcade to a new version. What does this mean?
Aside from some bug fixes, it adds things like:
Tracking how long you've played a game (and how long a game has been played overall) Ability to rate games Ability to add comments (ie: smack talk) to games A scrolling update bar of the most recent top scores A private message sent to you when your top score is broken
And a bunch more! (A lot of stuff behind the scenes)
Unfortunately, one of the options I didn't see before I installed was a timer on how long old tournaments are kept in the database before being deleted, and as such, we lost tourny info beyond last month. But, going forward, there's a tournament point system as well, so you've got that going for you, which is nice.
Also, don't forget about the challenge system, where you can go head-to-head against other users in a game of your choice for a set period of time. I don't need to set those up, you can do it in the Arcade.
All that being said - please vote in the poll - I want to know if now is as good a time as any for a score reset. I think it could liven the place up a bit, but if everyone is dead-set against it, I'll hold off.
Wednesday 03 September 2008 | All sorts of news on the Fountain

Well, we done had 4 tourneys, and I haven't updated squat! My bad! Let's recap!
Waaay back in July, we had the QB challenge tournament. Lucass finished first by a mile, with Virtual in second and Rage in third.
The second half of July saw the Greed Slingo tourny. Virtual took home top prize, with CousinJodi in second, and mima in 3rd.
In August, we had the much anticipated Big Money tournament. And, true to form, Megs took home top prize. Virtual was a close second, and Rage finished 3rd.
Finally, we had the Shuffle tournament, which I unfortunately did not get much time to play, but wanted to. Instead, CousinJodi swooped in and snagged first place, with Virtual in second and Rage in 3rd.
Are all these second place finishes by Virtual a look into the future? Will top scores begin to fall? Only time will tell.
Speaking of time, sorry for the delay in new games - time was screwy with me this month. Bear with me, and hang tight. New Virtual top scores will arrive soon.
